How Five Crowns scoring works
Five Crowns is played over 11 rounds. In round 1 everyone gets 3 cards and 3s are wild; each round deals one more card, so the last round has 13 cards and Kings are wild. Jokers are always wild. You try to lay all your cards down in books (three or more of the same card) and runs (three or more in a row in one suit). When someone goes out, everyone else gets one more turn, then adds up the cards they couldn't lay down. The lowest total after 11 rounds wins.
| Card left in your hand | Points |
|---|---|
| 3 to 10 | Face value |
| Jack | 11 |
| Queen | 12 |
| King | 13 |
| The round's wild card | 20 |
| Joker | 50 |
| Round | Cards dealt | Wild card |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 8 | 3 to 10 | The same as the number of cards: 3s, then 4s, up to 10s |
| 9 | 11 | Jacks |
| 10 | 12 | Queens |
| 11 | 13 | Kings |
Example: in round 4 (6s wild), you're left holding a 9, a King and a 6. That's 9 + 13 + 20 = 42, because the 6 is wild this round. In the score keeper, tap your score button, then 9, +20 and so on, or just type the total.
Your own Five Crowns score keeper
You'll describe the score keeper to a free AI assistant, paste what it writes into a file, and open it in your browser. Then add the game's own rules, the winner, saving and printing, one step at a time.
- A score sheet with a column for every player and a row for every round, labelled with that round's wild card
- A reminder of how many cards to deal and what's wild, every round
- Quick buttons for wild cards (20) and Jokers (50)
- Standings with the lowest score on top, and a winner after round 11
- Undo, saving, tap-to-fix for any score, and printable blank sheets
Good for: families who play Five Crowns at the holidays, anyone who always forgets what's wild, and long games that run past bedtime.
What you need
Build it in five steps
Step 1 gives you a simple version that works, and each step after it adds more. The score keeper at the top of this page is roughly what you'll have once you've done every step. Yours will look a bit different, because the AI writes its own version each time.
Ask for a simple Five Crowns score sheet
Copy this prompt into your AI assistant:
Copy this promptI don't know how to code. Please make me a Five Crowns score keeper that runs in a web browser, for my family to use instead of a paper score sheet. Requirements: - ONE single HTML file (HTML, CSS and JavaScript together), no external libraries, no internet needed. I will save it and double-click it. - At the top, a list of players with a name box for each, an "Add player" button (up to 8 players) and a small remove button. Start with two players called "Player 1" and "Player 2". - Below, a score table with one column for each player and 11 rows, one for each round, labelled with the wild card: 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s, 10s, Jacks, Queens, Kings. Under each score, show the player's running total in smaller text. - At the end of each round, a big number button next to each player's name. Tapping it opens a number pad to type their score. A "Save round" button adds the round to the table once everyone has a score. - A "Total" row at the bottom. In Five Crowns the LOWEST total wins, so highlight the lowest total. - Big, clear, friendly design with a dark background and buttons big enough to tap on a phone. Please give me the complete file in one code block, then tell me in simple steps how to save and open it.
Copy the code, paste it into your text editor, and save it as five-crowns.html. Double-click it, type your family's names and add a couple of rounds.
Show the deal and the wild card each round
The two questions everyone asks at the start of a round, answered before anyone has to.
Copy this promptThat works, thank you. Please add: - A big heading above the score buttons, like "Round 4: 6s wild", and a line saying "Deal 6 cards each. 6s are wild this round, as well as the Jokers." Round 1 deals 3 cards, and each round deals one more, up to 13. - In the number pad, quick buttons for "0 (went out)", "+20 (wild card)", "+50 (Joker)" and "+10". - Say who deals each round, moving one player along each time. Send me the complete updated file.
Always ask for the complete file. Replace everything in five-crowns.html, save, and refresh the tab (F5 or Cmd+R).Add the standings and the winner
Now it knows how a game ends.
Copy this promptPlease add: - A "Standings" list next to the table, sorted from lowest total to highest, with a place number for each player. - When round 11 (Kings wild) is saved, the game is over: show the winner (the lowest total) or a tie in a big friendly message, with a "Play again" button. Send me the complete updated file.
Save the game, add undo, and print score sheets
Someone always types the wrong number, and someone always closes the tab. This step fixes both, and gives you paper sheets for when you'd rather use a pencil.
Copy this promptPlease add saving, undo and printing: - Save the players and the game in localStorage after every change, so refreshing or closing the page doesn't lose anything. Add a note saying "Your game saves in this browser only. Nothing is sent anywhere." and a "Clear saved game" button that asks first. - An "Undo" button that takes back the last change, however many times I press it. Keep a copy of the whole game before each change to make this simple. - Let me tap any score in the table to change it, and work all the totals out again. - A "Print" panel with a choice of "A4" and "US Letter" paper, and buttons to print: 1. A blank score sheet that fills one page, with six player columns (a score and a running total for each), a row for every round, and the scoring rules in a box at the bottom. 2. The game being played right now, with everyone's scores filled in. - When printing, show only the sheet, with no buttons, using a print stylesheet and @page with the right paper size and 10 mm margins. Every sheet must fit on exactly one page. Send me the complete updated file.
Make it look and feel finished
Last of all, the touches that make it nice to pass round the table.
Copy this promptPlease finish it off: - Coloured animal avatars for players, which I can change, and up and down arrows to change the order. - A strip of player cards across the top showing each player's total, with a crown on whoever is winning. - A big celebration with confetti when someone wins, and a "Play again" button that keeps the players. - A "Keep the screen awake" tick box using the Wake Lock API, hidden or greyed out if the browser can't do it. - On a phone, stack everything in one column, make every button at least 44 pixels tall, and let the score table scroll sideways inside its box, never the whole page. Send me the complete updated file.
Quick fixes
The wild card is one round out
Tell the AI: "Round 1 deals 3 cards and 3s are wild. Round N deals N + 2 cards, and the wild card is the card with that number, so round 9 is Jacks, round 10 Queens and round 11 Kings."
It lets the game go past 11 rounds
Tell the AI: "A game is exactly 11 rounds. After round 11 is saved, end the game and show the winner."
The game was gone when I opened it again
Saving only works in the same browser on the same device, and private or incognito windows forget everything when they close. If it never saves, tell the AI: "Please save the whole game to localStorage after every change and load it when the page opens."
The printout spills onto a second page or shows the buttons
In the print window, set the scale to 100% (or "Default"), not "Fit to page", and pick the same paper size as the score keeper. If it's still wrong, tell the AI: "When printing, hide everything except the score sheet, and make the sheet a few millimetres shorter than the page so it always fits on one page."
It opens as text
Re-save as plain text with exactly .html at the end, not .txt.
Questions people ask
How do you score Five Crowns?
When a round ends, everyone adds up the cards they couldn't lay down: 3 to 10 are face value, Jacks 11, Queens 12, Kings 13, the round's wild card 20 and Jokers 50. Going out scores 0. The lowest total after 11 rounds wins.
What's wild in each round of Five Crowns?
The card that matches the number of cards dealt. Round 1 has 3 cards, so 3s are wild; round 2 has 4 cards and 4s are wild, and so on up to round 11, with 13 cards and Kings wild. Jokers are wild in every round.
How many rounds are in Five Crowns?
Eleven, from 3 cards up to 13. The score keeper labels each round with its wild card and ends the game after the Kings round.
How much is a wild card worth at the end of a round?
20 points if it's still in your hand, and a Joker is 50, so it usually pays to lay them down. The score keeper has quick buttons for both.
Can I print a Five Crowns score sheet?
Yes. Press Print in the score keeper and choose a blank Five Crowns score sheet, on A4 or US Letter, with a row for every wild card and the card values at the bottom. You can also print the game you're playing now.
Is it free, and is my game private?
Yes. There's no sign-up and no adverts in the score keeper. The game is saved in your own browser so you can carry on later, and nothing is sent anywhere. Clear it any time in Settings.
Twist it into something else
Players, rounds, undo, saving and printing work for almost any game with a score pad. Change the first prompt to make:
A Rummikub score keeper
the winner of each round scores the total of everyone else's tiles
A Golf card game scorer
six cards, pairs in a column cancel out, lowest after nine holes wins
A Hand and Foot score keeper
canasta bonuses and a minimum meld that goes up each round
A games night league table
keep every game's winner for the year, with a trophy cabinet
Your rules, your table, no adding up
Score pads go missing and the adding up always lands on one person. Yours knows what's wild every round, works on any phone or tablet, keeps the game if someone closes the tab, and never sends your scores anywhere. It's also a great first "real" app: buttons, tables, saving and printing, all in one small file you understand.
