Word Hunch

How to play

Type any five-letter word and press Enter. The tiles change colour to show how close you are, then you try again on the next row. You have six tries to find the word.

  • Right letter, right place
  • In the word, but somewhere else
  • Not in the word at all

Your stats

Type on your keyboard or tap the letters. Today's word changes at midnight where you are. Your games and stats stay in this browser; nothing is sent anywhere.

What you'll build

Your own five-letter word game

You'll describe the game to a free AI assistant, paste what it writes into a file, and open it in your browser. No coding needed, and once it works you can change anything about it just by asking.

  • A six-row grid of letter tiles that flip to green, yellow or grey
  • Repeated letters coloured correctly, the part most home-made versions get wrong
  • An on-screen keyboard that shows which letters you've used, so it works on a phone
  • A word of the day that's the same for everyone, plus unlimited play
  • Stats, streaks and a spoiler-free grid of coloured squares to share

Good for: a daily puzzle for the family group chat, a game using this week's spelling words, a word game in another language, or a first project that's more than a toy.

Before you start

What you need

An AI chat assistantClaude, ChatGPT or Gemini. The free version is fine.
A plain text editorNotepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac; choose Format then Make Plain Text first).
A web browserAny one will do.
First time? Read How to save and open an HTML file. It takes two minutes.
Step by step

Build it in five steps

Step 1 gives you a simple version that works, and each step after it adds more. Yours will look a bit different from the one above, because the AI writes its own version each time.

  1. Ask for the basic game

Copy this prompt into your AI assistant:

    Copy this prompt
I don't know how to code. Please make me a five-letter word guessing game that runs in a web browser.

    Requirements:
    - ONE single HTML file (HTML, CSS and JavaScript together), no external libraries. I will save it and double-click it.
    - The game secretly picks a word from a list of about 300 common five-letter English words that you write into the file. No names, no plurals and nothing rude.
    - The player has six tries. Show a grid of 6 rows of 5 big square tiles.
    - The player types with their keyboard: letters fill the current row, Backspace deletes, Enter checks a full row.
    - After each guess, colour every tile: green if the letter is in the right place, yellow if it's in the word but somewhere else, grey if it isn't in the word.
    - Get repeated letters right: colour all the green letters first, then only colour a letter yellow if the answer still has an unmatched copy of it.
    - When I win, say well done. If I run out of tries, show the word. Then offer a Play again button.

Please give me the complete file in one code block, then tell me in simple steps how to save and open it.

Copy the code, paste it into your text editor and save it as word-game.html. Double-click it and type your first guess.

Test the tricky bit: guess a word with a double letter, such as SPEED or LLAMA. If the answer only has one E, only one of your Es should light up.
  2. Add an on-screen keyboard

    Copy this prompt
That works, thank you. Please add an on-screen keyboard under the grid, in QWERTY order with Enter and Delete keys, so the game works on phones and tablets without opening the phone's own keyboard. Colour each key like the tiles so I can see which letters I've used (green beats yellow, yellow beats grey). Flip the tiles over one at a time when a guess is checked, and shake the row if a guess isn't allowed. Make everything fit on a phone screen without scrolling sideways. Send me the complete updated file.
Always ask for the complete file. Replace everything in word-game.html, save, and refresh the tab (F5 or Cmd+R).
  3. Only accept real words

    Copy this prompt
At the moment any five letters are accepted. Please only accept real English words. Check each guess with the free dictionary at https://api.dictionaryapi.dev/api/v2/entries/en/ followed by the word (it needs no key). If the word isn't found, shake the row and show "Not in the word list" without using up a try. Always accept words from my own answer list. If the dictionary can't be reached or takes more than 3 seconds, accept the guess anyway so the game still works offline. Send me the complete updated file.
Why a dictionary website? The game at the top of this page has 12,500 words built in, so it works offline. An AI assistant can't type out that many words in one reply, so checking a free online dictionary is the easy way to get the same result.
  4. Add a word of the day and unlimited play

    Copy this prompt
Please add two modes, with a button for each at the top:
    - Today's word: everyone gets the same word on the same day. Work it out from today's local date (count the days since 1 January 2026 and use that to pick from the list), so there's no server and the word changes at midnight. Number each day's puzzle. Save my guesses in localStorage so refreshing the page doesn't lose them, and only allow one game per day.
    - Unlimited: a random word each game, with a New word button.
Remember which mode I last used. Send me the complete updated file.
Tip: before this step, ask the AI to shuffle the order of the word list once. Otherwise days next to each other can give words that start with the same letter.
  5. Add stats and a result to share

    Copy this prompt
Please add a stats panel, saved in localStorage, with games played, win percentage, current streak, best streak and a small bar chart of how many guesses each win took. Keep separate stats for Today's word and Unlimited.

At the end of a game, add a "Copy result" button that copies a spoiler-free grid of coloured squares (🟩 🟨 ⬜), one line per guess, with the puzzle number and my score at the top, like "Word game #12 4/6", so I can paste it into a message. Send me the complete updated file.
Share it: put the file online for free with our free hosting guide, and the whole family can play the same word each day.

Quick fixes

Repeated letters are coloured wrong

This is the most common bug. Ask the AI: "Fix the colours for repeated letters. First mark every letter in the right place green. Then, left to right, only mark a letter yellow if the answer still has a copy of it that hasn't been matched yet."

Every guess says "Not in the word list"

The dictionary website may be blocked on your school or work network, or down for a while. Ask the AI to "accept the guess if the dictionary check fails or takes more than 3 seconds".

Today's word changes when I refresh

The game is picking a random word instead of using the date. Ask the AI to "pick today's word only from the date, never with Math.random".

The phone keyboard pops up and covers the grid

The game is using a text box. Ask the AI to "remove the text box and use only the on-screen keyboard and key presses".

The answer was a word I've never heard of

Ask the AI to "replace any unusual words in the answer list with everyday ones", or paste your own list of five-letter words and ask it to use those.

It opens as text

Re-save as plain text with exactly .html at the end, not .txt.

Questions

Questions people ask

Is this the same as Wordle?

It's the same kind of puzzle: guess a hidden five-letter word in six tries, with coloured clues after each guess. Word Hunch is our own version with its own word list, made by asking an AI assistant. It isn't connected to Wordle or The New York Times.

Can I play more than one game a day?

Yes. Today's word is one game a day, the same for everyone. Switch to Unlimited for as many new words as you like.

When does today's word change?

At midnight where you are. Everyone who plays on the same date gets the same word, so you can compare results with friends using Copy result.

Which words can be the answer?

About 1,550 everyday English words. There are no names, no plurals ending in S, nothing rude, and no words that are spelled differently in British and American English. You can guess any of 12,500 English words, including both spellings.

Does it work on a phone or a Chromebook?

Yes. It runs in any up-to-date browser on a phone, tablet, Chromebook or computer. Tap the letters on screen or type on a keyboard.

What if I'm stuck?

Press Reveal word, then tap it again, to see the answer. It counts as a loss in your stats. In Unlimited you can then press Next word to carry on.

Is it free?

Yes. It's free with no account, and your games and stats are saved in your own browser.
