What you'll build

A quiz night in a web page, with your own questions

You'll describe the quiz to a free AI assistant, paste what it writes into a file, and open it in your browser. Then add teams and a scoreboard, a timer, your own questions and a printable answer sheet, one step at a time. It's a lovely one to make together, because everyone can write a question.

  • Multiple-choice questions, one at a time, in big text for the TV or the board
  • Play on your own, with instant right and wrong, or in teams with a quiz master who reveals each answer
  • A scoreboard with team names, and a winner at the end
  • An optional countdown timer for each question, with sound effects made in the browser
  • Your own questions in a simple box, saved on your device, and a printable question and answer sheet

Good for: family quizzes after Christmas dinner, the class Christmas party or the last day of term, office and team socials, Brownies, Cubs and youth groups, and anyone who's been asked to "do the quiz this year".

Before you start

What you need

An AI chat assistantClaude, ChatGPT or Gemini. The free version is fine. Most AI assistants are for adults or teens only, so if you're making it with children, the grown-up does the typing.
A plain text editorNotepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac; choose Format then Make Plain Text first).
A web browserChrome, Edge or Safari. A laptop plugged into the TV or a classroom board makes it feel like a real quiz show.
First time? Read How to save and open an HTML file. It takes two minutes.
Step by step

Build it in five steps

Step 1 gives you a simple quiz that works, and each step after it adds more. The quiz at the top of this page is roughly what you'll have once you've done every step. Yours will look a bit different, because the AI writes its own version each time.

  1. Ask for the quiz

Copy this prompt into your AI assistant:

    Copy this prompt
I don't know how to code. Please make me a Christmas quiz game that runs in a web browser.

    Requirements:
    - ONE single HTML file (HTML, CSS and JavaScript together), no external libraries, no internet needed. I will save it and double-click it.
    - 15 Christmas multiple-choice questions for a family, each with one right answer and three wrong ones. Keep the questions in a list near the top of the code, so I can change them easily.
    - Show one question at a time in big text, with the four answers as big buttons labelled A, B, C and D. Mix up the order of the answers each time.
    - When I tap an answer, turn the right one green, and the one I picked red if it was wrong. Then show a Next button.
    - Keep a score, and at the end show how many I got right, with a Play again button that mixes up the questions.
    - A festive design: a dark night-sky background, gold and green colours, and buttons big enough to tap on a phone.

Please give me the complete file in one code block, then tell me in simple steps how to save and open it.

Copy the code, paste it into your text editor, and save it as christmas-quiz.html. Double-click it and play a round. Check the answers yourself: AI assistants sometimes get trivia wrong, so read through the list before quiz night.

  2. Add teams and a quiz master

At a party, one person reads the questions and the teams write their answers down. The quiz needs a mode for that.

    Copy this prompt
That works, thank you. Please add a team mode, with a switch between "Just me" and "Teams":
    - Let me choose 2 to 6 teams and type a name for each one, with festive names to start with (Elves, Reindeer, Snowmen and so on).
    - In team mode, tapping an answer does nothing. Instead there's a "Show the answer" button for the quiz master.
    - After the answer shows, show a button for each team so I can tap the teams who got it right. Each one gets a point when I press Next.
    - A scoreboard along the bottom with every team's name and score.
    - At the end, show the teams in order, with the winner at the top, and say if it's a draw.
    - Save the team names in localStorage.

Send me the complete updated file.
Always ask for the complete file. Replace everything in christmas-quiz.html, save, and refresh the tab (F5 or Cmd+R).
  3. Add question packs and an emoji round

Little ones and grown-ups need very different questions, and an emoji round gets everyone shouting.

    Copy this prompt
Please split the questions into packs I can choose from:
    - Kids: 20 easy questions for ages 5 to 8 (Rudolph, Santa, snowmen, Christmas songs).
    - Family: 20 questions for everyone, including Christmas films and traditions.
    - Grown-ups: 20 harder questions about Christmas history, number ones and traditions around the world.
    - Emoji round: 12 Christmas films and songs written as emojis, shown really big, for example ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ˜ฑ for Home Alone.
    - Buttons to choose a pack, and a choice of 10, 15, 20 or all the questions. Pick them at random each time.
    - Only use facts you're sure about, and keep the wrong answers believable but clearly wrong.

Send me the complete updated file.
  4. Add a timer and sounds

    Copy this prompt
Please add a timer and some sound effects:
    - A choice of no timer, 20 seconds, 30 seconds or 1 minute for each question.
    - Show the time left as a bar that shrinks, turning red for the last 5 seconds, with a soft tick each second.
    - When time runs out on your own, count it as wrong and show the answer. In team mode, just say "Time's up!".
    - A happy chime for a right answer, a low "uh-oh" for a wrong one and a little fanfare at the end. Make the sounds with the Web Audio API, so there are no sound files, and add a button to turn them off.
    - A Full screen button, so it fills the TV or the classroom board.

Send me the complete updated file.
  5. Add your own questions and a printable answer sheet

The best quiz questions are about your own family or class. And the quiz master needs the answers on paper.

    Copy this prompt
    Please add two more things:
    1. A "Your own" pack with a text box where I type my own questions, one on each line, like this:
What is our dog called? | Biscuit | Pickle | Rex | Bruno
The first answer after the question is the right one, and the rest are wrong. If I only give a right answer, make it a write-it-down question: show the question, then reveal the answer when I press "Show the answer". Save the box in localStorage.
    2. A "Print questions and answers" button. Print the questions for the round about to be played, with their A to D answers, on one page, and the answers on a second page for the quiz master. Hide everything else on the page when printing, and use black text on white so it's cheap to print.

On a phone, put the settings under the quiz and make sure nothing scrolls sideways.

Send me the complete updated file.

Quick fixes

One of the answers is wrong

AI assistants sometimes make up trivia that sounds right. Look up anything you're not sure of, then tell the AI: "Question 7 is wrong, the right answer is ... Please fix it and send the complete file." Or simply delete that question from the list in the code.

The right answer is always in the same place

The answers aren't being mixed up. Tell the AI: "Please shuffle the four answers for every question each time it's shown, and check which one is right by its text, not its position."

The same questions come up every time

Tell the AI: "Please shuffle the whole question list at the start of every game, then take the first 10."

There's no sound

Browsers only play sound after you've tapped or clicked on the page, so press Start first. Check the volume, and the silent switch on an iPhone or iPad.

The printout includes the whole web page

Tell the AI: "When printing, hide everything except the question and answer sheets, using @media print in the CSS."

My questions disappeared

They're saved in the browser you typed them in, so they won't appear on a different device or in a private window. Keep a copy of your questions somewhere, or paste them in again.

Make it your own

Twist it into something else

A list of questions and a scoreboard can run almost any quiz. Change the first prompt to make:

A "how well do you know us?" quiz

questions about your family, your year or the bride and groom, for a party or a wedding

A picture round

show a photo of a baby, a blurry close-up or a famous face, and guess who or what it is

A music round

play the first few notes of a song with the Web Audio API and name that tune

A revision quiz

this term's science or history facts for the class, with the same teams and timer

A New Year's Eve quiz of the year

one round per month, ending with a countdown to midnight

A pub quiz night

rounds with jokers that double a team's points, and a picture round for the break

Why build it yourself?

Questions only your family can answer

Most Christmas quizzes online are long lists of questions to read out, or slideshows that need a login, adverts or a subscription. Yours runs on the TV without the internet, keeps score for you, and has the questions that get the biggest laughs: who fell asleep first last Christmas, what the dog ate, and which teacher wears the loudest jumper. You can change the colours, add rounds, and use it again for birthdays and New Year.

Questions

Questions people ask

Is this Christmas quiz free?

Yes. It's free, with no sign-up, no adverts in the quiz and nothing to download. Play it as often as you like.

How do I run it as a team quiz?

Choose "Teams, with a quiz master", pick how many teams and type their names. Read each question out, let the teams write their answers down, then press "Show the answer" and tap each team that got it right. The scoreboard keeps count, and Full screen puts it on the TV or the board.

Are there easy questions for young children?

Yes. The Kids pack has 26 easy questions for ages 5 to 8, about Rudolph, Santa, snowmen and Christmas songs. The Emoji round works well for mixed ages too, because the little ones are often fastest.

Can I add my own questions?

Yes. Choose "Your own" and type one question on each line, with the right answer first and then the wrong ones, separated by a | line. Leave out the wrong answers for a write-it-down question. They're saved on your device for next time.

Can I print the quiz?

Yes. Press "Print questions and answers" to print a question sheet with the A to D choices, and a separate answer sheet for the quiz master. All the questions and answers are also listed on this page.

Can I use it for a class Christmas party?

Yes. Put it full screen on the board and split the class into teams. There are no pupil accounts and nothing pupils type is collected, and this page has no tracking cookies.
